The work of a packaging designer – technical expertise and visual eye

Behind the packaging of KLINGER Finland Oy is packaging designer Roosa Nevalainen, who joined our company in September 2024. She designs packaging solutions primarily for valves and actuators. Her work brings together practicality, functionality and visual appeal. Which is an excellent example of how a packaging designer’s role blends creative thinking, technical expertise and sustainable choices.

The primary purpose of a packaging is to protect the products during transport, storage and handling. The structure of the packaging must be durable to ensure that the product remains intact throughout the entire supply chain. A well-designed package also enhances logistics efficiency by optimizing space and handling. In addition, packaging serves as a important communication tool: it conveys product information and supports the brand’s identity.

A versatile role in packaging design

Nevalainen’s role as a packaging designer is diverse. She is responsible for the design of both single and multi-packaging solutions, including their internal components. Her work involves 3D modeling, prototype testing and designing packaging labels. Her responsibilities also include assisting with marketing. Some of KLINGER Finland’s various marketing materials, such as brochures and posters, are made by Nevalainen.

Packaging designing requires a visual eye and a technical understanding of structures and production processes. “The job is really versatile when you do packaging design and marketing,” Nevalainen says. The diversity of the work and new challenges make her work meaningful and exciting.

Problem solving is a essential part of her daily work and something she sees as the most rewarding part of the job as a packaging designer. In particular, designing multi-packs has provided her with an opportunity to grow professionally and develop her own expertise. “You can’t grow without challenging yourself,” Nevalainen sums up.

Sustainability is also a central theme in a packaging designer’s work. Nevalainen pays special attention to minimizing excess material and ensuring that materials are recyclable. The role requires precision, creativity, problem solving skills and 3D-visualization skills.

Nevalainen collaborates closely with both internal and external stakeholders, especially with KLINGER Finland’s warehouse personnel. She has played a key role in developing the packaging design process and has been responsible for ensuring the progress of various projects.

The importance of workplace community is evident in how Nevalainen talks about her experience. She describes the working atmosphere as warm and encouraging. She feels that employee well-being is genuinely prioritized: “There are actions, not just words.”

For example, flexible working hours, adaptable practices and the opportunity to take part in recreational and sports activities positively affect well-being and influence the perception of the employer. Nevalainen also mentions that employees have the chance to make their voices heard at the workplace, for instance value surveys.

Nevalainen has grown in her role naturally, taken on more responsibility and developed her skills in a wide range of areas. The variety of the work and a great team have supported her professional development and strengthened her place as a valuable part of the team.
