KLINGER Finland has joined the Food Data Finland initiative as a technology supplier, supporting the development of a more transparent and competitive food supply chain through smart marking solutions and shared data standards.
Food Data Finland, coordinated by GS1 Finland and partly funded by Business Finland, is a national growth engine project that brings together key stakeholders from across the food value chain – from primary production to manufacturing, logistics, and retail. Participants include leading companies and associations such as Apetit, Atria, Fazer, HKFoods, Kesko, SOK, Valio, ETL, PTY, and MTK.
The project drives systematic data development throughout the entire food ecosystem. This involves creating shared practices for data usage, building more efficient operational models, and developing new data-based products and services. The goal is to strengthen the digital transparency and international competitiveness of the Finnish food chain.
KLINGER Finland’s role: Enabling traceability with GS1 2D code marking
As a technology partner, KLINGER Finland helps define how practical traceability solutions are implemented using common standards and frameworks. We contribute deep expertise in product marking technologies, enabling batch- and unit-level coding directly on production lines.
A key example is the GS1-compliant 2D code, which includes the traditional EAN identifier plus batch and expiration information. This enables expired products to be blocked already at checkout, reducing errors and food waste. At the same time, consumers can scan the same 2D code with their smartphone to access more detailed product information – such as origin, manufacturer, instructions, or environmental impact.
